Smart Design, Rain or Shine

We hate to be the ones to tell you this, but bad weather is on the way.  Predictors from the Old Farmer’s Almanac to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration are forecasting that temperatures are going to be lower than average – and precipitation is going to be higher than average. Believe it or not, this is the kind of thing that worries self storage facility designers – and not just because it makes driving more of a headache.  Why?  Here are just a few reasons:

• What difference does the orientation of a self-storage facility matter when it comes to winter weather?  As it turns out – a lot.  A north-south orientation of a building might make a big difference in how quickly snow and ice disappear from a facility by taking advantage of maximum sun exposure.
• If your facility is in an area with heavy snowfall, what’s the easiest and quickest way to clear out the drive lanes after a storm?  Some self-storage facilities include secure snow gates into their layout to allow a snowplow or other equipment to get in, move the snow, and get out.
• And what happens when all of that snow begins to melt?   Will your project use surface drainage for water run-off, or will local ordinances require you to design your facility with storm drains?
